GRAT BE’AL GEBRI
The Grat Be’al Gabri is the largest building on the Northern Horn of Africa,
erected in a singular timber frame work technique in the early 1st millenium
BC. It is probably the administrative centre of Yeha. Six stone pillars,
originally almost 10 meters high, adorned the entrance area with two monumental
stone door posts.
Since the early 1st millenium BC cultural contacts esiste between South
Arabia (Yemen) and Tigray (Ethiopia). A migration of South Arabians into
the region of Ethiopia led to an acculturation processo f South Arabian
and African elements.
This can be traced through forms of rule, language and writing, religion,
architecture, as well as the spere of arts and crafts. Yeha was the political
and religious centre of this emerging polity.
GREAT TEMPLE
The Great Temple was built in the 7° century BC and dedicated to the
highest deith of Saba, the god Almaqah. Following South Arabian models
the entrance of the temple was equipe originally with 6 ston pillars.
The 14 m. high walls were made of limestone ashlars quarried in the region
of mekele. Since the early Christian period the building has been used
